Imagine a city where 60,000 rats have invaded homes and streets, creating a massive infestation. This is the reality for Glasgow, a city struggling with a booming rat population. The numbers are staggering, with over 60,000 reports of rodent sightings since 2019.
The situation has been worsening year after year, and the latest data is alarming. In just the first month of this year, there have been 53 reports, bringing the total to a shocking 59,874 sightings in the past seven years. And it's not just on the streets; many of these rats have been spotted inside people's homes, which is a cause for serious concern.
Certain areas of Glasgow seem to be hotspots for these unwanted visitors. Dumbarton Road, Paisley Road West, and Argyle Street, among others, have consistently topped the list for rodent sightings. Glasgow has earned the unfortunate reputation of being Scotland's 'rat capital', and it's not just a local issue. Last year, the city was ranked as the third worst place in the UK for vermin.
A prominent trade union convener, Chris Mitchell from GMB, has called for urgent action, describing the situation as a 'rat emergency'. He believes that the warm weather this summer could lead to an even bigger explosion in rat numbers across the city. Mitchell has been vocal about the need for increased efforts to tackle the rat crisis, despite previous investments in street cleaning and cleansing workers.
"I fear the problem will only get worse as we move through 2026. Warmer weather means more frequent breeding for rats. It's a perfect storm: sunshine, abundant food, and overgrown areas provide the ideal conditions for them to thrive," Mitchell said. He added that the issue is spreading into the city centre, with reports of rats in bins, lanes, and even flagship shopping areas.
The data backs up Mitchell's concerns. There has been a consistent spike in rat sightings over the years. In 2019, the council logged 6,170 reports, with over 1,500 of these within properties. The numbers continued to rise, with 7,404 reports in 2020 and 7,405 in the following year. By 2023, the figure had rocketed to 8,959, with almost 2,000 sightings in domestic properties.
Paul Carey, a councillor for Drumchapel and Anniesland, who worked on the freedom of information request, said the issue has evolved from being predominantly in Glasgow's disadvantaged areas to a much wider concern. "It's not just housing estates anymore; we're hearing about rats in the city centre, public parks, everywhere. These figures show the problem is getting worse, and we need to focus more on tackling it," Carey stated.
A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council acknowledged the difficulty of the problem and asked for public cooperation. They emphasized the importance of proper food waste disposal in bins to deter rats, as well as the need for hygiene and pest-proofing measures in properties. The council has taken steps to address the issue, including extending their pest control team and investing in frontline services, such as recruiting more street cleansing and parks staff.
"We have also begun rolling out on-street bin hubs with more frequent collections for flatted properties. Early indications show that these measures are helping to manage waste and control the pest population," the spokesperson added.
This rat infestation is a complex issue, and while the council is taking steps to address it, the situation is far from resolved.
