Preserving the Modern Heritage of Abu Dhabi: A Journey Through Time and Space
In a city where memories and nostalgia intertwine with the present, Abu Dhabi has taken a bold step to safeguard its modern heritage. Over 40 sites, including the beloved Green Souk and Corniche Hospital, have been officially designated as modern heritage landmarks, bridging the gap between the past and the vibrant present.
The Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has announced an expansion of the Modern Heritage Register, a move that recognizes the importance of spaces that have shaped the emirate's growth and development.
But here's where it gets controversial... Unlike traditional heritage sites, this register focuses on places that residents have actively engaged with - lived, studied, worked, or traveled through. It's a unique approach that highlights the daily life and experiences of the community.
The list includes a diverse range of locations, from schools and post offices to hospitals and public markets. For instance, the Green Souk in Bani Yas and Al Shahama, a bustling marketplace, and the Corniche Hospital, a healthcare landmark, are now protected by law.
And this is the part most people miss... The initiative also encompasses well-known civic and cultural sites, such as the Al Ain Museum, one of the UAE's earliest museums, and the former Abu Dhabi International Airport Terminal 1, a testament to the emirate's aviation history.
Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi, emphasizes the significance of this expansion:
"Abu Dhabi's modern heritage is a cornerstone of our cultural identity. By protecting these sites, we preserve the architectural and urban legacy that defines our communities."
The initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi's Cultural Heritage Law, ensuring the protection of both tangible and intangible heritage, including modern landmarks.
With this designation, the sites will be maintained and rehabilitated according to their heritage status. It's an opportunity for residents to reconnect with familiar places, not just as part of their daily routine, but as integral parts of the city's shared story.
