Wind Farm Expansion Sparks Air Traffic Control Concerns
The UK's air traffic control body, NATS, has raised objections to plans for a major wind farm expansion in Scotland, sparking a debate over the balance between renewable energy and air safety.
Hare Hill Wind Farm, located on the border between Dumfries and Galloway and East Ayrshire, currently houses 55 turbines. Scottish Power Renewables aims to replace these with 23 new, taller turbines, a move that could significantly boost electricity production.
However, NATS warns that this expansion could impact radar systems, potentially compromising air traffic control capabilities at Prestwick Airport. The radar at Great Dun Fell and Lowther is crucial for detecting aircraft, and NATS argues that the proposed changes could reduce its effectiveness.
The Hare Hill wind farm has a rich history, with its first phase consisting of 20 turbines, each standing at 63 meters (200 feet), and becoming operational in 1999. An extension, featuring 35 turbines at 91 meters (300 feet), was added around 18 years later.
If approved, Scottish Power Renewables plans a phased replacement, starting with the oldest turbines and gradually introducing 15 new ones. This process would be followed by another phase, replacing the remaining 35 turbines with eight more, resulting in towering structures between 150 meters (490 feet) and 200 meters (650 feet) tall.
This scale increase has led NATS to voice its opposition, emphasizing the potential risks to air traffic control. The decision now rests with the Scottish government, who must weigh the benefits of increased renewable energy against the concerns raised by NATS.
Scottish Power Renewables counters that the expansion will triple the farm's electricity output, meeting the energy needs of approximately 75,000 homes. They also highlight the community engagement in the planning process and the substantial funding allocated to local projects.
