A major leadership shift is underway at Albany Med, sparking immediate changes within the healthcare system. This announcement, released early Thursday evening, reveals a new era for the Albany Med Health System. The Board of Directors has unanimously chosen Capital Region entrepreneur Daniel T. Pickett III to step into the role of president and chief executive officer, effective immediately.
This decision marks a significant transition, as Dr. Dennis P. McKenna, who dedicated 28 years to Albany Med, including five years as CEO, is stepping down.
Pickett's journey with Albany Med began in 2012 when he joined the board. He was elected as the chair of the Albany Med Board in July, a position he'll hold for a two-year term. But here's where it gets interesting: Pickett is not just a healthcare executive; he's also the CEO of AptiHealth, a behavioral health care company focused on connecting patients with comprehensive care. Furthermore, he leads Hudson River Capital Holdings, a private investment company. His background also includes leadership roles at global technology companies Zones and nfrastructure.
Albany Med's description of Pickett highlights his extensive experience in enterprise transformation, healthcare operations, technology innovation, and growth strategy. He's known for guiding organizations through significant scaling and modernization efforts in complex environments. He also brings over a decade of governance experience from non-profit institutions, including Albany Med and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he serves as a trustee.
Pickett's prepared statement emphasizes a vision for the future built on system integration, physician alignment, academic distinction, and innovation. He expressed his honor in leading the system to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care across all its hospitals, specialties, and communities.
The Albany Med Board expressed its gratitude to Dr. McKenna in the news release. But the release did not include a statement from McKenna.
McKenna's tenure as CEO, which began on April 1, 2020, coincided with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, during which he became a prominent figure in the Capital Region's response. His time in the role also included challenges such as prolonged contract negotiations with the Albany Med nurses union, which were ultimately resolved in August. There was also a violation of state safe staffing regulations, resulting in a fine, and a lawsuit alleging racial and political bias. This is the part most people miss: These issues likely played a role in the leadership change.
With Pickett's promotion, the board has selected Raimundo “Rai” C. Archibold Jr. as its chair. Archibold is a managing director at Schwartz Heslin Group Business Advisors in Albany.
The AlbanyMed Health System encompasses Albany Medical Center, Albany Medical College, Columbia Memorial Health, Glens Falls Hospital, Saratoga Hospital, and the Visiting Nurses Association. As the region's only academic health system, it serves a population of 3 million people across northeastern New York and western New England.
