In the 10th edition of Cancer Council Australia's March Charge, a fitness-meets-fundraising initiative, this dynamic duo is setting individual goals. Mrs. Chan reveals their ambitious targets: a staggering 1000 kilometers and $888 in donations each by month's end. And this is where the challenge truly begins.
Mrs. Chan's motivation stems from a cross-country connection. Her sister, Agnes, a medical researcher in Sydney, ignited the spark. "I've known about March Charge, but never participated," Mrs. Chan admits. But when Agnes reached out, saying, "I want to do this, will you join me?", she couldn't resist.
As Mrs. Chan prepared to embark on her fundraising journey, she approached her husband with a request. But instead of sponsorship, Mr. Harrison chose to lace up his running shoes and join the cause.
For Mr. Harrison, this event hits close to home. Having witnessed cancer's impact on loved ones, he also battled the disease himself in 2013. "Hearing the diagnosis was overwhelming," Mrs. Chan recalls. The Cancer Council played a pivotal role in his journey, offering resources and support to navigate the challenges of surgery and chemotherapy.
His message to others is clear: trust your instincts and seek medical advice. Mrs. Chan elaborates, "He had to advocate for himself, as the doctor initially suspected something else." This experience underscores the importance of early detection and prevention.
Mrs. Chan's drive extends beyond the physical challenge. Influenced by her sister's profession, she recognizes the long-term benefits of medical research. "Medical breakthroughs require time and investment," she emphasizes. "Without funding today, tomorrow's cures might never come."
