Carlsberg's Renewable Energy Revolution: Power Purchase Agreements in the Nordic Region
Carlsberg is on a mission to power its operations with clean energy, and it's taking bold steps to make it happen. The company has recently announced the signing of three long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with energy suppliers in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, ensuring a significant portion of its electricity comes from new renewable assets.
But here's where it gets exciting: these PPAs are not just about buying electricity; they're about driving real change. By securing long-term offtake and revenue certainty, Carlsberg is actively contributing to the development of additional renewable energy capacity in the Nordic region, accelerating the transition to clean energy.
Let's dive into the details of these agreements:
Norway: Ringnes Brewery's Green Energy Source
Ringnes will purchase 435 GWh of electricity over 10 years from the Fennefoss run-of-river hydro power plant, supplied by Å Energi. This agreement, starting in January 2026, will provide a significant boost to Ringnes' sustainability efforts. In the first year, it will supply approximately 15 GWh, scaling up to 45 GWh after two years, covering around 90% of their electricity consumption.Sweden: Carlsberg Sverige's Wind Power Commitment
Carlsberg Sverige will source its energy from the Orkenwind wind farm in Halland, Sweden, operated by RWE. The 8-year agreement, also starting in January 2026, ensures a yearly production of around 25 GWh. This is a substantial contribution, as Carlsberg Sverige currently consumes approximately 32 GWh annually, meaning the PPA will cover roughly 78% of their electricity needs.Finland: Sinebrychoff's Wind Farm Venture
Sinebrychoff will purchase electricity from an onshore wind farm in Paltusmaki, Finland, operated by Encavis. This 10-year agreement, also commencing in January 2026, utilizes a power plant commissioned in 2021, producing around 60 GWh annually. Sinebrychoff's annual electricity consumption of approximately 28 GWh means the PPA will cover about 90% of their energy needs.
These PPAs are a significant step towards Carlsberg's sustainability goals, demonstrating its commitment to renewable energy. But why does this matter? PPAs are a powerful tool in the fight against climate change. By securing long-term contracts with renewable energy producers, Carlsberg ensures that its electricity comes from newly built renewable assets, such as wind farms, solar parks, and hydropower plants.
Torsten Steenholt, EVP of Integrated Supply Chain, emphasizes the importance of these agreements: "Securing renewable electricity through Power Purchase Agreements is a cornerstone of our sustainability program. These new PPAs across the Nordics allow us to accelerate the green transition and support the development of additional renewable energy capacity. The three new agreements complement our existing PPAs in Lithuania, Denmark, and China."
This initiative is a testament to Carlsberg's dedication to sustainability and its belief in the power of PPAs to drive real change. As the company continues to expand its renewable energy commitments, it sets an example for the industry, inspiring others to follow suit and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
