China Boosts Support for Returning Overseas Students as Numbers Rise
China has rolled out a nationally coordinated service platform to help returnees secure jobs and start businesses, signaling a stronger push to attract talent as the pool of returning students grows.
In a collaboration between the Ministry of Education and fifty partner organizations, returning students will gain access to entrepreneurial mentors and direct connections to local government needs and corporate opportunities.
These steps underscore a continued national recognition of the value overseas returnees bring, even amid recent public debates about the benefits and drawbacks of studying abroad. As one analyst noted, overseas graduates continue to drive innovation and entrepreneurship, shaping multiple industries and strengthening China’s talent base.
The ministry has highlighted sectors such as artificial intelligence and advanced materials as areas with heightened demand for overseas talent.
The new program was announced during a Shanghai event commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Chunhui program, a longstanding initiative designed to encourage abroad-educated students to contribute to national development.
Wang Daquan, head of the Education Ministry’s Chinese Service Centre for Scholarly Exchange, told CCTV that research indicates young people studying abroad harbor a strong interest in returning to China to work or launch ventures.
