Imagine a time when you could cross the Atlantic in under four hours. Sounds like science fiction, right? But it was reality for nearly 30 years, thanks to the Concorde, a supersonic jet that captivated the world. But the Concorde is no longer flying, and this is more than just a technological marvel relegated to museums; it's a story of innovation, luxury, and ultimately, a bittersweet ending.
Fifty years after its first commercial flight, the Concorde continues to fascinate, and a Surrey pilot, Mike Bannister, who holds the distinction of being the youngest person to ever pilot this iconic aircraft, shares his memories. Bannister's story offers a unique window into the Concorde's legacy. The Concorde's first commercial flight took off from London Heathrow on January 21, 1976, marking the beginning of an era of supersonic passenger travel. It soared through the skies for almost three decades before its retirement in 2003.
Bannister, hailing from Staines, captained the Concorde's very last commercial journey. While acknowledging the sadness surrounding the plane's retirement, he also expresses excitement about the future of supersonic travel. He marvels at the fact that the Concorde, designed in the late 1950s and early 1960s, still stands unmatched in its capabilities. "It's fascinating to think that Concorde was designed in the late 1950s and early 1960s and there's still nothing that can do all the things it could all that time ago."
Speaking at Brooklands Museum, the home of one of the preserved Concorde aircraft, Bannister fondly recalls the passengers he flew. He noted that while many were business executives or world leaders, the most memorable were those experiencing the 'trip of a lifetime.' These passengers, he says, were genuinely thrilled by the experience. "Most of our customers were business people or world leaders, but we really enjoyed carrying those people who were doing the trip of a lifetime because they were the ones who got really excited."
He also described the unique atmosphere on board, explaining how frequent flyers often became friendly with the crew, creating a sophisticated, almost club-like environment in the air. "Some passengers travelled so frequently that they would become friends of the crew. It was rather like a sophisticated club in the air." The Concorde's signature route, connecting London Heathrow to JFK Airport in New York, commenced in November 1977, following its initial flights in 1976.
According to British Airways, the Concorde completed nearly 50,000 flights, carrying over 2.5 million passengers during its service. From 1985 onwards, supersonic journeys also originated from Gatwick Airport, expanding its reach. Cruising at over twice the speed of sound, reaching speeds of 1,354 mph (2,179 km/h), the Concorde was a true marvel of engineering. Bannister captained its final flight from New York to London on October 24, 2003, marking the end of an era.
And this is the part most people miss... While the Concorde was an incredible feat of engineering, its high operating costs and environmental concerns ultimately led to its demise.
