Diamondbacks Re-Sign Merrill Kelly: $40 Million, 2-Year Deal | MLB Free Agency (2026)

Merrill Kelly is officially making his way back to Arizona, as the Diamondbacks have confirmed a two-year contract extension worth $40 million. This agreement, which was announced on Friday, follows an initial tentative deal reached on Sunday that required a physical examination to finalize.

Under the terms of this new contract, the right-handed pitcher will receive a signing bonus of $2 million, alongside salaries of $17 million in 2026 and $21 million in 2027. Additionally, there’s a vesting option available for the 2028 season, adding potential longevity to his time with the team.

At 37 years old, Kelly has already established himself within the Diamondbacks organization, having spent the first six and a half years of his professional career there. His journey saw a temporary detour when he was traded to the Texas Rangers at the trade deadline this past July, yet he proved to be effective for both teams, ending the season with a combined record of 12 wins and 9 losses, accompanied by a respectable earned run average (ERA) of 3.52.

Looking ahead to the upcoming spring training, Kelly could very well take on the role of the Diamondbacks' ace pitcher in a rotation that might also feature Ryne Nelson, Brandon Pfaadt, and Eduardo Rodriguez. Meanwhile, Corbin Burnes is still on the mend following Tommy John surgery, and 2023 All-Star Zac Gallen is currently a free agent, making his return to the team seem unlikely.

Kelly's return isn't particularly surprising; after all, he hails from Scottsdale and played college baseball at Arizona State University. He quickly became a fan favorite, especially after being a pivotal player in the team that made it to the World Series in 2023. During that season, he posted a record of 12-8 and maintained an impressive ERA of 3.29, not to mention his standout performance in Game 2 of the World Series against the Rangers, where he helped secure the sole victory for the Diamondbacks in that series.

While Kelly may not have the most overpowering pitches in the league, he excels by utilizing a diverse six-pitch repertoire that keeps opposing hitters guessing. His journey to Major League Baseball is notable, as he made his debut at the age of 30 in 2019, following a successful four-year stint in South Korea from 2015 to 2018, where he achieved a record of 48 wins and 32 losses with a 3.86 ERA.

This news invites fans to reflect on how Kelly’s unique style and experience might influence the Diamondbacks' pitching strategy moving forward. Are you excited about this signing? What do you think it means for the team's future?
