La Jolla homeowner says SDG&E overcharged him for years due to extra meter from old EV program
A La Jolla homeowner says he's been overcharged by San Diego Gas & Electric for years after discovering an extra meter on his property from an old electric vehicle charging program. The homeowner, Manoj Aggarwal, has lived in his La Jolla house for three years and believes he's been overcharged since moving in. He found a second meter on his property, which led to a double charge for his home and EV charger.
The extra meter was installed due to an electric vehicle charging program by SDG&E that ran between 2012 and 2014. Anthony Wagner, a communications manager with SDG&E, confirms that Aggarwal's home is not the only one with extra meters tied to the old program. There are approximately 140 customers with legacy programs, meaning they have two meters dating back to the original electric vehicle plans. However, Aggarwal argues that these extra meters should have been removed after the program ended in 2014.
After reviewing Aggarwal's case, SDG&E concluded that he was not being overcharged and attributed the issue to a communication problem. Wagner explains that with two meters, one usage is subtracted from the other, making the bill accurate despite the initial confusion. However, Aggarwal remains convinced that he was overcharged and has not been on the correct rate or plan for having an electric vehicle.
The company says it has not overcharged this customer and that the issue was resolved after initial coverage on billing problems. Aggarwal contacted ABC 10 News for help, and the issue was resolved within a few days. As for the over 100 customers with extra meters, the future plans for removal are unclear. SDG&E encourages anyone with questions to contact them immediately.
