Ireland faces a concerning surge in flu-related hospitalizations as vaccination uptake remains stubbornly low, prompting government officials to call for stronger protection ahead of peak season. Health authorities report that influenza is spreading earlier than in recent years, amplifying the strain on hospitals and emergency departments.
In the week beginning November 30, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) logged 2,944 flu cases, a 49% jump from the previous week’s 1,971. Hospital admissions climbed 58% to 657, while emergency department visits for flu rose 55% to 1,662. Patrick O’Donovan, Ireland’s Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, told parliament that more than three-quarters of the people currently in hospital with flu are unvaccinated, underscoring the upside risk of a low uptake.
Flu activity has reached high levels, with the youngest children under 15 and adults over 80 bearing the heaviest burden. Since the season began, 42 patients have needed intensive care and 13 deaths have been recorded. Officials warned that flu activity is emerging earlier than in prior seasons and urged people to get vaccinated to blunt severe illness and ease hospital pressure.
A notable rise in cases among children has driven a large portion of this increase. The latest HPSC bulletin shows that influenza is driving most respiratory illnesses in Ireland. GP consultations for respiratory infections reached 171 per 100,000 people in late November, up from 115 the prior week, with the sharpest rise among young children. Flu-like illness consultations also exceeded seasonal norms, and about half of GP tests for flu returned positive results.
Other viruses, including RSV and COVID-19, remain at low levels. COVID-19 cases ticked up to 132 last week, with hospital admissions increasing 70% to 56, but intensive care cases and deaths stayed low. Health authorities reiterated that vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent severe illness from flu, RSV, and COVID-19. Campaigns are prioritizing older adults, healthcare workers, and vulnerable groups, while hospitals are strengthening infection-control measures and surge planning.
Officials will monitor whether flu activity peaks quickly or persists into mid-winter and whether other viruses rise in tandem. The HPSC stated that vaccination remains one of the most powerful tools to reduce severe illness. While a growing flu season is expected, the week-on-week surge suggests a level of intensity above typical seasonal patterns, prompting public health teams to intensify vaccination campaigns and reinforce infection control across healthcare settings.
Despite the worsening flu picture, other respiratory viruses—such as RSV, SARS-CoV-2, and rhinoviruses—remained below the 10% positivity threshold, indicating these pathogens have not yet gained widespread traction. Emergency department COVID-19 attendances stayed low, and overall hospital occupancy due to the virus showed no signs of strain. The trend signals that even a mild SARS-CoV-2 wave can modestly increase demand on healthcare services.
Rising flu activity at this stage commonly foreshadows higher hospitalizations and potentially ICU admissions. Public health authorities will continue to monitor trends closely to determine if seasonal thresholds are surpassed and to guide vaccination and infection-control strategies.
