Is NoAA 19 still active? ›

For years, NOAA's Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellites (POES) satellites have provided the backbone of the global observing system. Our current operational POES satellites include NOAA-15, NOAA-18, and NOAA-19.

Mission. Automatic Picture Transmission (APT) transmission frequency is 137.62 MHz. Due to problems with the S-band transmitter high-gain antennas, NOAA-15 has been configured for High-Resolution Picture Transmission (HRPT) using the S-Band Transmitter #2 (1702.5 MHz) omnidirectional antenna.

NOAA 18 and NOAA 19 weather satellites provide free accessible weather data continuously through Automatic Picture Transmission at 137.9125 MHz and 137.1000 MHz frequencies.

The NOAA-17 weather satellite operated in polar orbit near 800 km from 2002 until it was decommissioned in April 2013. The spacecraft broke up almost eight years later in March 2021 producing about 100 trackable objects.

NOAA plans to begin drifting GOES-19 from its checkout location to its operational location of 75.2 degrees west longitude in March 2025. GOES-19 is planned to take over as NOAA's operational GOES-East satellite in April 2025. GOES-16, the current operational GOES-East, will become the on-orbit standby.

However, NOAA-16's APT has been inoperable since November 2000 due to sensor degradation and was decommissioned in 2014 after a critical anomaly.

All NOAA Weather Radio stations broadcast on one of seven frequencies in the VHF Public Service band: 162.400 megahertz (MHz), 162.425 MHz, 162.450 MHz, 162.475 MHz, 162.500 MHz, 162.525 MHz, and 162.550 MHz.

Damage during manufacture

The NOAA-19 satellite contains an advanced version of the SARP instrument (SARP-3), but not the NOAA-18's DCS system. The AVHRR and AMSU systems were both designated for a three-year mission.
